Ella Rock is a more demanding walk than Little Adam’s Peak — commonly three to four hours return, partly along the railway line and then up through eucalyptus and grassland. The route is not consistently signposted and several informal paths branch off it.

Many walkers hire a local guide, which is a sensible choice in mist or after heavy rain. Start early, carry water and food, and turn back if visibility closes in; the summit view is the whole point of the walk.

Where the route follows the railway, stay alert and step well clear of the track whenever a train approaches.
