The Nine Arch Bridge carries the hill-country railway across a green valley on nine tall arches, and is one of the best-known sights in the Ella area. Most visitors walk in from Ella town or from the Gotuwala side; both approaches involve uneven paths and steps.
The line is in daily use. Do not stand on the track, walk through the tunnels or wait on the bridge for a photograph — trains cannot stop quickly and staff regularly ask people to move. Timetables change, so treat any posted “train time” as a rough guide rather than a promise.
Mornings are usually quieter and clearer; afternoon cloud can settle over the valley. There is no charge to view the bridge from the public paths, though small parking or refreshment charges may apply locally.
