Practical notes for the hills

Weather, cash, connectivity and the small preparations that make a hill-country stay easier.

Generated fictional folded layers, a rain jacket and a notebook

September 6, 2026 · Travel thoughtfully

None of this is dramatic, but each item quietly improves a few days in the hills.

Pack a warm layer

At around 1,000 m the evenings genuinely cool. A light fleece is used more than people expect.

Expect rain, plan around it

Hill weather changes quickly in any season. A compact rain jacket beats an umbrella on an exposed path.

Carry some cash

Cards are widely accepted in hotels and larger restaurants; tuk-tuks, small shops and roadside stalls generally are not. Small notes are useful.

Connectivity is decent, not universal

Mobile data works well in and around town and drops in valleys and on parts of the walks. Download maps before you set out.

Insect sense and sun sense

Repellent for evenings on a terrace, and sunscreen for a walk that felt cloudy at the start. Altitude hides how strong the sun is.
