Walking in the hill country, sensibly

What to carry, when to start, and the honest limits of a hill walk in changeable weather.

The walks around Ella are beautiful and, in good conditions, straightforward. Most difficulties come from weather, footwear and starting too late — all of which are within your control.

Start early

Mornings are cooler and usually clearer. Cloud tends to build through the day, and a viewpoint in mist is simply a wet hillside.

Footwear beats fitness

Paths are worn earth and rock, and they become slick within minutes of rain. Shoes with real grip make more difference than an extra month of training.

Carry more water than you expect

Humidity does the damage here, not distance. Two litres between two people on a short walk is a reasonable minimum.

Know when to turn round

Fading light, heavy rain or a path you are no longer sure of are all good reasons to stop. The hills will still be there tomorrow, and a guide costs far less than a rescue.

Respect working land

Many routes cross tea estates and private property. Stay on the path, close gates, and take your litter with you.
