Ella sits in the hills, and every route to it involves winding roads or a slow, spectacular railway. None of the options is wrong; they simply suit different days.

By train

The hill-country line from Kandy or Nanu Oya is genuinely one of the great rail journeys, and it is slow — that is the point. Reserved seats are limited and sell out well ahead in busy months. Check current schedules and reservation rules with Sri Lanka Railways directly; third-party timetables go out of date quickly.

By car or private driver

The most flexible option, and the easiest with luggage or children. Journey times are longer than distances suggest; hill roads average far below highway speeds.

By bus

Frequent, inexpensive and used by everyone. Buses are busy, luggage space is limited, and the driving is brisk. A fine choice for short hops.

Arriving

Whatever you choose, plan to arrive in daylight. The final approach to hillside properties is narrow and unlit, and it is a nicer first impression by day.
